Alumni Stories - Keith Kelly

Hello everyone,

Just wanted to drop by and tell you about some things that I've been up to since graduating twice from Sheffield. Aside from mixing, I have been designing some very interesting pieces of equipment which should be reaching the prototype stage this fall. Since graduating, I've live-mixed many great artists including Phil Lesh, Stanley Jordan, Mates of State, The Apples in Stereo, WALE, Rusted Root, Eli Young Band, Donnie McClurkin, Tye Tribbet, Marc Bernstein, Jim Dragoni and many more. So, if you're feeling frustrated, you only have to wrap cables for a little while longer. The trick with being successful in audio engineering is to be a little inventive and don't limit yourself to just "live sound" or "sound design". When those resources go cold, as they often do, at least you have a few other hustles to feed off of. Pick up mastering skills and learn how to really do monitors well.

Stay on top of the new technology for live and studio use, just don't be a sucker and fall into the "upgrade" trap. At the end of the day, it is your time, knowledge and experience that someone is paying you for, not the gear. If you can mix, it doesn't matter if it is with Pro Tools 6 or 10. You either can mix or you can't. Same goes for live sound. If you can't make it sound good with a POS Mackie, how do you think you will do better with a Venue console? More plugins doesn't make you a better engineer. After all, Jesus didn't have a drill press and a band saw, and supposedly he was a pretty decent carpenter. Just remember to enjoy yourself and stay humble. It took me many years to reach the point of trust to be handed Phil Lesh and Stanley Jordan on the same stage to mix.
