How to Improve Audio Quality in Videos

Creating a video may not seem too difficult, but there are many complicated technical details that must be addressed before, during, and after the recording of the video. One of the biggest aspects is the audio that goes along with the video. High-quality, perfectly-synced audio and video make for an enjoyable video, but if the audio is low quality, distorted, or out of sync, it is instantly noticeable by viewers, and this can result in an unwatchable video. Let’s take a look at some of the steps to take before recording to ensure high-quality audio, as well as some steps to take after recording, if the audio does not meet your quality standards.

Use the Right Microphone

The best way to avoid bad audio is to be prepared for it by utilizing a high-quality microphone during the recording process. Depending on the situation, these microphones may be:

  • On-camera microphones: Microphone is installed on the camera. This is the most common method of distortion and background noise, as any movement of the camera may result in some unwanted noise.
  • Hand-held microphones: This type of microphone is exceptional at eliminating background noise and distortion; however, it is not useful in many videos as it is very noticeable and not useful during many types of performance videos.
  • Lavalier Microphones: The least noticeable microphone. Properly secured to a collar or lapel, this type of microphone will eliminate noise and distortion.
  • Headset Microphones: Headset microphones are used in many situations when performers need their hands to be free; however, this type of microphone is still noticeable, and can't be used for many types of videos.
  • Shotgun Microphones: This type of microphone is typically attached to a boom pole, and is used in most types of professional filming. Most other types of microphones must be used at close range, but shotgun microphones can be used at longer distances without losing quality.

Other props that can help reduce noise and increase quality during recording include pop shields, windshields, boom poles and tripods.

Replace audio

The best way to improve audio quality is to completely replace the flawed audio. This is especially useful in music videos, as the distorted section of the video can be redone and used to replace the flawed audio.

Removing noise

There are many applications that can be used for removing unwanted noise and distortion from videos. Adobe Premiere Pro CC can be used to remove noise, as well as sync audio and video. Quicktime Pro and Audacity can be used to enhance the quality of audio as well. Using the correct tool and noise filter can result in a high-quality video with clear audio.

Vocal Enhancer Audio Effects

Vocal enhancer audio effects can be used to enhance the quality of voice-over recordings. Typical effects include male voices, female voices, and music compression and equalization.

There are many different types of distortion and noise, such as buzzing, hums, hisses, whistling and more. While the best method of obtaining high-quality audio is to be prepared with the right microphones, filters, props and other equipment, the right tools can also be used to remove unwanted noise once it has already infiltrated the audio.
